About Bluefish

We build software inside hospitals — for the people who run them.

Bluefish Systems automates the tedious, manual work hospitals run on — and we build it from inside the building. Three decades of real problems in real health systems taught us where the busywork piles up, and how to make it elegant without ripping out the systems you already have.

The team behind it

Real people who've run real hospitals.

We're a small, senior team of hospital-IT practitioners — people who have built and operated clinical portals, integration engines, revenue systems and quality tools inside working health systems. Not a startup guessing what healthcare needs from the outside; the people who've lived the 2 a.m. version of the problem and built the fix.

Our story

Born in a hospital, not a boardroom.

Bluefish didn't start as a software company looking for a market. It started inside hospital IT — building the portals, integrations, and quality tools that real clinical and operational teams needed and couldn't buy. That lineage runs from Arkansas Children's to Phoenix Children's and across health systems in the US and Canada.

Along the way the thesis sharpened: hospitals run on a mountain of tedious, manual work — coding charts, releasing records to outside doctors, printing paystubs, tuning databases — that the big, expensive systems (EMR, ERP) leave behind or create. The right move isn't to rip those systems out; it's to extend them and automate the busywork, on open standards, so the tools work with whatever stack a hospital already runs.

Today Bluefish is five products, each ending one of those tedious jobs — and a team that still thinks like the hospital-IT operators it came from.

What we believe

Four convictions, in every product.

Born in real hospitals, not a VC deck

Every product comes from a real problem our team hit inside operating health systems — built and used on the floor, not dreamed up by a startup chasing the latest thing.

Automate the tedious

We take the manual, repetitive work hospitals run on — coding, records release, payroll, database tuning — and make it elegant. AI where it earns its keep; smart software everywhere else.

Extend what you run, don't replace it

We sit on top of the systems you already have — EMR, ERP, payroll, databases — on open standards (HL7/FHIR), and replace only what's outdated and overpriced.

Usable without a manual

Teams adopt our tools with little or no training, because the people who design them have run hospital IT and know what a 2 a.m. shift actually needs.

David founded Bluefish to turn three decades of hospital-IT work into products other health systems could run. He is EVP & Chief Innovation Officer at Phoenix Children's and the former CITO of Arkansas Children's, and was named CHIME's Innovator of the Year in 2016. The tools Bluefish sells are the tools his teams build and operate — which is exactly why they're EMR-agnostic, standards-based, and usable without a manual.
